How Opportunity Can Transform Lives: Accessibility in Action

Every journey begins with possibility. Meet Jenni, Jamie, Dani, and Devin, whose experiences reflect how the right support can help people pursue lives shaped by their own goals and aspirations.
When we think about accessibility, we might picture ramps, accessible parking spaces, or automatic doors. While these accommodations play an important role in creating inclusive spaces, it reaches beyond the physical changes.
Accessibility includes having readily-available resources that people need in daily life, while also creating space for them to be recognized for who they are, share their contributions, and experience a sense of belonging in their communities and beyond.
During Disability Pride Month, we’re celebrating the individuality that shapes every person’s story, and recognizing that meaningful access looks different for everyone.
The people below — all individuals in Flathead Industries’ services — have their own lived experiences, interests, and goals, and their journeys exemplify what is possible when 1. people are seen and understood for who they are, and 2. they are supported in ways that reflect their individual aspirations and the direction they want their lives to take.

Jenni: Finding Her Voice Through Poetry

An avid writer since childhood, Jenni has used poetry as an outlet to explore her identity, healing journey, and personal growth as someone with cerebral palsy. Through her writings, she shares raw reflections and creates space for her experiences and voice to be heard. “Writing allows me to speak on my own terms, with my own rhythm, and without the need for anyone’s permission,” she says.
For Jenni, every poem is an opportunity to challenge perceptions and remind others of the power of self-expression: “Cerebral palsy and creative expression are inseparable in my life — each poem becomes a declaration that my voice matters, my body is capable, and my story is worth telling.”
Before receiving services through Flathead Industries, Jenni often felt that the individualized support she needed was not fully recognized. She has lived in our supported living apartments for over eight years and receives the level of support where she feels empowered to make choices about her own life. Through one-on-one support and personal accommodations in her home, she has gained the skills and confidence to live with greater independence: “Flathead Industries gives me what I need, and they listen to me… they see through my struggles.”

Rapid fire facts about Jenni:

Being the fashion icon that she is, Jenni will be the first to tell you about her love for pink and black, as well as shopping, candy, and all things creative.
Current obsession? Pink and black (obviously).
If you could have any superpower? Saving people and bringing them out of unsafe situations.
Three foods you’d want in a zombie apocalypse? Chocolate, spaghetti, and giant cinnamon rolls.
Who’s cooking at your dream restaurant? Gordon Ramsay (We happen to have a few kitchens that would be perfect for a special guest chef… just saying).
At Flathead Industries, Jenni works in our administrative office, assisting with filing, writing case notes, and signing thank-you cards for donors, among other projects. And every year, she looks forward to Climb Big Mountain and Summer Camp on Flathead Lake – our favorite traditions for spending time together and enjoying some of the best parts of a Montana summer.
For Jenni, having the opportunity to be listened to and supported has made all the difference, and she continues to bring that same kindness and understanding to those around her.

Jamie: Art With a Purpose

Jamie is a passionate artist who uses painting and drawing to express his creativity and bring the things he loves to life. Living in one of Flathead Industries’ group homes, his room resembles an eclectic gallery, filled with artwork inspired by his favorite stories and characters. Walk in, and you will see that Jamie is a devoted Phantom of the Opera fan — he’s even traveled to see performances of the beloved musical!
Jamie’s talent was recently showcased at Flathead Industries’ 2025 Murder Mystery Gala, where his artwork was featured as part of the silent auction. His time and artistic talent contributed to an event that raised over $170,000 to support programs and services for people with disabilities.
Through his art, Jamie continues to share the things that bring him joy, creating memorable connections and passing that joy on to others.

Dani and Devin: Growth & Advocacy Together

Dani and Devin’s story together began on the basketball court at a Special Olympics game: Dani went up for the shot, Devin stepped in for the block, and the rest is history. Together since 2018, they have continued to root for each other both on and off the court, supporting one another through all of life’s adventures and challenges.
Before they met, though, their individual journeys led them to Flathead Industries, where they were able to grow their independence through our supported living and other services. Through their experiences, they’ve learned the impact of creating opportunities — not only for themselves, but for others.

Dani

When Dani first began receiving services through Flathead Industries in 2015, she put her life at the time simply: “The only thing I had back then was my two feet and my bike.” Before then, she relied on walking, biking, and limited transportation options to get where she needed to go. Determined to build a more independent life for herself, Dani made the decision to seek services on her own at 18.
Working alongside her support team, Dani reached milestones that once felt out of reach. With the help of her job coach, Dani found employment at Smith’s, and, in 2019, earned her driver’s license — a major milestone that gave her more freedom in her everyday life.
Outside of work, Dani continues to find joy through the things she loves most. She stays active through Special Olympics basketball and recently discovered a passion for diamond painting, filling her home with the artwork she has created and is even working on a surprise project (stay tuned!). She also spends time with her seven-year-old emotional support dog, Alfredo, who has been a steady companion for her over the years.
Dani also uses her own experiences to advocate for others. As a member of the MonTECH Advisory Council, she helps promote the importance of assistive technology and the role it plays in helping people with disabilities live more independently. Having experienced challenges growing up, including being teased and not always having access to the support she needed, Dani is passionate about making sure others have the resources and encouragement they need. She also serves as the council’s photographer, using her skills to capture and share the stories of others.

Devin

Since joining Flathead Industries’ services in 2010, Devin has continued working toward greater independence while building valuable skills within the organization and beyond. He started out working at Kalispell Thrift before transitioning into Flathead Industries’ work crew, and eventually found his current role at the Clearance Store, where he enjoys connecting with customers and sharing more about the mission behind the thrift stores. Looking back on his journey, Devin says, “Flathead Industries has supported me through a lot in my life… it’s great to have someone help guide this path.”
Like Dani, Devin is also passionate about supporting others. Through his service on the Montana Developmental Disabilities Council, he advocates for people with disabilities, especially those in rural communities, by sharing his experiences and encouraging them to seek the support they need.
“I’m trying to make a difference as much as possible and give people hope,” he says.
A passionate sports fan, Devin would love to see NFL or NBA athletes come to our annual summer camp or Special Olympics to teach some pro moves or even show off a few skills. So consider this your official invitation: we’re ready when you are.
Together, Dani and Devin’s story is a reminder that a single opportunity can unexpectedly change someone’s life — even one as ordinary as a competitive moment on the court. It grew into a connection built on shared experiences, mutual support, and a commitment to helping others see their own potential.
After learning about each person’s journey, one thing becomes clear: there is no single path or definition of success, and the support that helps one person thrive may look different for another. At the heart of our work at Flathead Industries is “Creating Opportunities,” which involves recognizing those differences and supporting each person in pursuing what matters most to them — because everyone deserves the opportunity to build a life that reflects who they truly are.
